Labor and Health Economics Expert Matthew Notowidigdo Affiliates with Compass Lexecon

Compass Lexecon is delighted to announce that Matthew J. Notowidigdo has affiliated with the firm. He is the David McDaniel Keller Professor of Economics and the Co-Director of the Tolan Center for Healthcare at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Professor Notowidigdo brings expertise in labor economics, public finance, and health economics.
In labor economics, he has studied the causes and consequences of long-term unemployment and the effects of immigrant visas on firms and workers. In health economics, he has studied the impact of public health insurance expansions on hospital finances and the effects of hospitalizations on consumer finances and labor market outcomes. He is currently working on several large-scale randomized evaluations of worker training programs and Medicaid managed care plans.
Professor Notowidigdo is the co-author of Better Health Economics: An Introduction for Everyone, a masters-level textbook. His research has been published in major academic journals and news outlets, including the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the American Economic Review, the Review of Economic Studies, the New England Journal of Medicine, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Wall Street Journal. He frequently appears as a guest on NPR Marketplace.
In 2021, Poets & Quants recognized him as one of the “40 Most Outstanding B-School Profs Under 40 in the World.” Professor Notowidigdo is currently a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research, a member of the Board of Editors at the American Economic Journal - Economic Policy, and an Associate Editor at the Quarterly Journal of Economics. He is also a Scientific Director at J-PAL North America.
Professor Notowidigdo has consulted extensively for professional sports teams on ticket pricing and has testified before the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine and the Congressional Budget Office. He previously worked as an associate at Lehman Brothers in the Fixed Income Division.
