Matthew J. Notowidigdo

Senior Consultant

Matthew J. Notowidigdo is a Senior Consultant with Compass Lexecon. He is the David McDaniel Keller Professor of Economics and the Co-Director of the Tolan Center for Healthcare at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

Professor Notowidigdo studies a broad set of topics in labor economics and health economics. In labor economics, he has studied the causes and consequences of long-term unemployment and the effects of immigrant visas on firms and workers. In health economics, he has studied the effects of public health insurance expansions on hospital finances and the effects of hospitalizations on consumer finances and labor market outcomes. He is currently working on several large-scale randomized evaluations of worker training programs and Medicaid managed care plans.

Professor Notowidigdo’s research has appeared in the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the American Economic Review, the Review of Economic Studies, and the New England Journal of Medicine, among others. Professor Notowidigdo’s research has been covered in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal, and he has frequently appeared as a guest on NPR Marketplace.

Within academia, he has received numerous awards for undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentoring. In 2021, Poets & Quants recognized him as one of the “40 Most Outstanding B-School Profs Under 40 in the World.” Professor Notowidigdo is currently a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economics Research, a member of the Board of Editors at the American Economic Journal - Economic Policy, and an Associate Editor at the Quarterly Journal of Economics. He is also a Scientific Director at J-PAL North America.

Outside of academia, Notowidigdo has corporate experience as an associate at Lehman Brothers in the Fixed Income Division, and he has consulted extensively for professional sports teams on ticket. He has also testified before the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine and the Congressional Budget Office.
