Prominent Health Care Economist Professor Anup Malani Affiliates with Compass Lexecon

Professor Malani is currently the Lee and Brena Freeman Professor of Law at the University of Chicago. He also holds a courtesy appointment at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and currently serves as a faculty affiliate at the Center for Health and Social Services. In addition, Professor Malani has previously held academic positions as an Associate Professor on Health Care Policy at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, a Senior Fellow at the Leonard D. Schaeffer Center for Health Policy and Economics at the University of Southern California, and a Visiting Professor and Visiting Director at the Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law Policy, Biotechnology and Bioethics at the Harvard Law School.

Professor Malani is also an editor at the Journal of Law and Economics, the Founder and Faculty Director of the International Innovation Corps, a member of the Faculty Advisory Council of the Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation, and a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research.

Professor Malani is a nationally recognized expert in health care and insurance markets, medical innovation, drug regulation, new technologies such as blockchain, and applied econometrics and has published extensively in these areas among others. His research has been published in top journals such as the Journal of Political Economy, Journal of Econometrics, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Theoretical Population Biology, Harvard Law Review, University of Chicago Law Review, Archives of Internal Medicine and Health Affairs. His research and field work has been funded by USAID, DFID, the Gates Foundation, the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation, and the Tata Trusts. Professor Malani has taught classes in the health area, as well as a range of other subjects including bankruptcy, law and economics, and the policy implications of blockchain. He teaches JDs, MBAs, PhDs and MDs. He has acted as a consultant in the health care industry in various contexts.

Professor Malani has a PhD in Economics and a JD from the University of Chicago. He clerked for Judge Stephen Williams of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia and Justice Sandra Day O’Connor of the United States Supreme Court.
