Thomas R. Varner is an Executive Vice President in the Oakland office of Compass Lexecon. Dr. Varner has extensive experience in complex commercial litigation including intellectual property, class action, breach of contract, and antitrust matters. He has provided expert witness testimony before juries in U.S. District Court in patent, copyright, and trademark infringement matters. In addition to his expert witness testimony experience, Dr. Varner has also been the principal investigator on both technology and trademark licensing research projects. Dr. Varner has analyzed over 5,000 technology licenses from SEC filings in the high-tech, life sciences, telecommunications, financial services, transportation, and chemicals industries and had published findings of his research in peer reviewed journals. Dr. Varner has spoken at professional conferences, universities, and law firms on technology licensing issues and economic damages in litigation.  He has also taught microeconomics, econometrics, and financial economics courses in the Economics Department at the University of California, Davis. Prior to his career as an economist, Dr. Varner was an engineer for 12 years.
