Richard Friberg, Frode Steen and Otto Toivanen to support growing Nordic team

Compass Lexecon is delighted to announce the appointment of three highly respected academics as Affiliates in the Nordic region, working alongside our established practice in Helsinki.

Professors Richard Friberg, Frode Steen and Otto Toivanen join our growing Nordic team based in Helsinki and London, led by Senior Vice President Pekka Sääskilahti. They are renowned experts in industrial organization with extensive experience in economic research and competition policy work.

Professor Richard Friberg is currently the Jacob Wallenberg Professor at the Stockholm School of Economics. His research interests include industrial organization and international trade with an emphasis on imperfectly competitive markets and issues related to how firms respond to uncertainty and various risks, including exchange rate risk. He is also adjunct professor at NHH Bergen. Richard’s work has been published in leading journals including the American Economic Review, Journal of Finance, Journal of International Economics, Journal of Public Economics, Journal of the European Economic Association, Journal of Money, Credit and Banking, and the International Journal of Industrial Organization.

Professor Frode Steen is currently the holder of NHH Bergen’s NorgesGruppen-professorship in Competition Economics on Grocery Markets and works in the field of empirical industrial organization and antitrust issues. He is also a research fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research since 2005. Frode specialises in investigating market power and how cartels operate and has particular expertise in the airline, gasoline, grocery and telecommunication sectors. He has extensive experience as an independent expert in sector-specific regulation and competition cases in Norway and Sweden. Frode’s research has been published in the American Economic Review, American Economic Review: Microeconomics, Economic Journal, European Economic Review, and International Journal of Industrial Organization, among others.

Professor Otto Toivanen is a faculty member at the Department of Economics at Aalto University School of Business and he has been appointed to head the newly founded Helsinki Graduate School of Economics. He is an expert on industrial organization and the economics of innovation, and has advised on numerous competition and damages cases in Finland. Otto is a member of the European Advisory Group on Competition Policy at DG Competition, and he is on the editorial board of the International Journal of Industrial Organization. He has been a member of the executive committee of the European Association for Research in Industrial Economics and an associate editor of the Journal of Industrial Economics. He is also a research fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research. Otto’s work has appeared in journals such as RAND Journal of Economics, American Economic Review: Microeconomics, Review of Economics and Statistics, and the Economic Journal.
