B. Douglas Bernheim is a Senior Consultant with Compass Lexecon. He is the Edward Ames Edmonds Professor of Economics in the Department of Economics at Stanford University. Professor Bernheim is an expert in industrial organization, mergers, public economics, behavioral economics, game theory, and financial economics. He has provided expert analysis and testimony in various federal courts and before major regulatory bodies, primarily in cases involving issues in antitrust, regulation, competition economics, and economic damages for a wide range of industries such as financial services, computing, consumer electronics, pharmaceuticals, transportation and shipping, and professional sports.

Professor Bernheim is an accomplished thought leader and has published over 100 academic articles, including dozens in the economic profession’s most prestigious journals such as the American Economic Review, Econometrica, Journal of Political Economy, Quarterly Journal of Economics, and the Review of Economic Studies. Additionally, he has authored four books, including the Handbook of Behavioral Economics – Foundations and Applications, and Microeconomics, a widely used textbook.

Professor Bernheim has received numerous awards and fellowships for his contributions to economics, including an honorary doctorate from the University of Zurich, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Research Fellowship. He has also won several “best article” awards for specific research contributions, such as the 2022 Exeter Prize for the best published paper in Experimental Economics, Behavioral Economics, and Decision Theory. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a fellow of the Econometric Society, and a senior fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research.

He was shortlisted for Global Competition Review’s “Economist of the Year” in 2024. Professor Bernheim is recognized by Lexology as a Global Elite Thought Leader in competition economics.
