Compass Lexecon is pleased to announce that Dr. Miguel de la Mano has joined the firm as an Executive Vice President. He will be working from our Brussels office. Miguel de la Mano joins us from the European Commission, where he was Head of Economic Analysis of Financial Markets at DG Internal Market. He started at the European Commission in late 2000 as a competition economist. In 2003, he became a member of the newly created Chief Economist Team at DG Competition. He was appointed Deputy Chief Economist in 2009. From October 2011 to May 2012, Miguel de la Mano served as Acting Chief Economist at the UK Competition Commission.

Miguel de la Mano has extensive experience in the competition area. Over the last 15 years, he has been closely involved in dozens of in-depth merger and antitrust investigations, at the fact-finding, analysis and decision-making stages. He has defended the EU Commission in several court proceedings and provided economic testimony to EU Courts in several high profile antitrust and merger cases.

Miguel de la Mano has co-drafted guidelines setting out the European Commission's analytical framework on merger control, vertical and horizontal agreements (Article 101 TFEU), as well as single firm conduct (Article 102 TFEU). He also co-drafted "guidelines on the submission on economic evidence" for DG Competition and the "new market investigation guidelines" for the former UK Competition Commission.

He has written articles on EU competition policy and financial market regulation, with the aim of shaping and guiding EU enforcement and policymaking. Regarding his work at the European Commission, Jonathan Faull, Director-General of DG Financial Stability, Financial Services and Capital Markets Union, indicated that he greatly appreciated Miguel's contributions to the Commission's policy work and that he "injected fresh economic thinking".

Jon Orszag and Jorge Padilla, both Senior Managing Directors of Compass Lexecon, said: "We are excited to welcome Miguel to Compass Lexecon and look forward to working with him. Miguel is a rare talent, combining brain power with a significant depth of experience at DG Competition, DG Internal Market, and the UK Competition Commission. His addition significantly strengthens our already strong European competition practice".

Miguel de la Mano stated "I am delighted to join Compass Lexecon, home to the some of the sharpest minds in the field of competition economics. My soon-to-be colleagues have a distinctive ability to present complex economic concepts and data in an understandable manner to enforcement agencies and courts. My object is to add to Compass Lexecon's already exceptional expertise with the 'effect' of further enhancing the quality and relevance of economic analysis in competition policy enforcement in Europe."

Miguel de la Mano completed his graduate studies in economics at the Institute for World Economics in Kiel, Germany, and the European Institute at Saarbrucken University, Germany. He conducted his PhD research at Oxford University, UK.
