Dr. Pekka Sääskilahti is an Executive Vice President, Head of IP Practice of Compass Lexecon International, and Head of Finland and Scandinavia at Compass Lexecon.
He has economic consulting experience in competition cases and in intellectual property matters. He has worked more than 25 years in the telecommunications and high-tech industries as an in-house economist, as well as in management consulting. Pekka has served as Professor of Practice at Hanken School of Economics teaching intellectual property and competition economics, pricing, and strategy.
Pekka is particularly known for his expertise in IP matters. He is the economic expert in various proceedings regarding FRAND royalties for Standard Essential Patent portfolio licenses. He has developed methodologies and economic models to estimate the value of IP and in particular patent licences. He also testified in front of an arbitral panel, and at the Finnish Market Court in the MTV vs Teosto copyright dispute, concerning the reasonable level of music copyright royalties for TV programmes on MTVs pay-TV and video on demand services.
Pekka regularly provides economic advice to parties in merger proceedings, such as Saferoad/Cleanosol and Tiemerkintä A&E, Bonnier/HSS Media, Caverion/TM Voima, Lantmännen/Sponmill, Valmet/Neles, Cargotec/Konecranes, Framatome/Rolls-Royce, Altia/Arcus, Mehiläinen/Pihlajalinna, Loomis/Automatia, Donges Steel/Ruukki Building Systems, Sanoma/Alma Media, Kesko/Heinon Tukku, and Caverion/Maintpartner. He has also advised clients in relation to Article 101 and 102 matters, damages, and regulatory policy. Before joining Compass Lexecon, Pekka was the Head of Research and Director of Economics at Nokia. His work at Nokia focused on pricing, competition economics, intellectual property, and strategy development.
Pekka has a Ph.D. and a M.Sc. in economics from the Helsinki School of Economics, which included year-long visits to the University of Warwick and the Toulouse School of Economics. He has published his economics research in academic journals including the Journal of Health Economics, the Journal of Economics & Management Strategy, the Scandinavian Journal of Economics, the Journal of Competition Law & Economics, the Journal of Health Economics, and the Economics of Innovation and New Technology.
He is listed as a Thought Leader in the Lexology Index for Intellectual Property Experts and for Competition Economists.
