Michael S. Kwak is a Senior Vice President in the New York office of Compass Lexecon. Prior to Compass Lexecon, Mr. Kwak was a Senior Director in the Economic Consulting segment at FTI Consulting.
Mr. Kwak specializes in the development and implementation of complex econometric analyses, sophisticated damages quantification and valuation models. He has led engagement teams in the preparation of economic and statistical analyses for numerous Fortune 500 corporate clients in a variety of matters, including EEOC discrimination, wrongful termination/wrongful death lost wage analysis, labor recertification class action lawsuits, fixed income and derivatives valuations, and other statistical and econometric matters. Mr. Kwak has also worked on escalation valuation and risk contingency estimation in large scale construction/insurance matters, having worked directly on aspects of the World Trade Center rebuild. Mr. Kwak also directed a valuation team responsible for estimating the fair market value of an exotic structured note portfolio with a notional value in excess of 15 billion dollars in connection to the bankruptcy filing of the Lehman Brothers investment bank. Most recently, Mr. Kwak was directly involved in the matter Starr International Company Inc. v. The United States where he co-led the engagement team that was responsible for assessing the market impact and commercial reasonability of the Government rescue of AIG.
Prior to his time at FTI, Mr. Kwak worked as a financial advisor in the Private Client Services and the Israeli Institutional practices of Bear Stearns where he managed the daily trading activity of the firm’s Israeli institutional clients and specialized in restricted stock transactions and 10b5-1 plans for high net worth individuals. A Series 7 licensed registered representative from 1996 through 2007; Mr. Kwak has worked with, corporations, high net worth individuals, and closely-held business owners in all aspects of their investment planning and implementation.
In order to achieve the short-term and long-term financial objectives of his clients, Mr. Kwak structured investment plans that made use of a diverse mix of asset classes, including: common stocks, mutual funds, annuities, unit investment trusts, government and corporate bonds, and derivatives. Mr. Kwak has extensive experience designing and implementing complex options strategies such as bull/bear spreads, straddles, and the writing of options contracts. Mr. Kwak actively managed and monitored each client’s portfolio performance within the context of current market conditions.
Mr. Kwak holds a B.A. in Economics from Columbia University where he graduated summa cum laude, phi beta kappa. Mr. Kwak received his Masters in Economics from The Graduate School of Arts and Science at New York University.
