Derek Ritzmann is a Senior Vice President based in Hong Kong and leads Compass Lexecon’s activities across the Asia-Pacific region in close connection with Compass Lexecon’s offices world-wide.

Dr. Ritzmann has been working in the areas of competition economics, law and policy since 1996 and has a strong record of interpreting and applying the economic principles that underpin modern competition enforcement. He has held a number of different positions in both competition agencies and economic consulting firms where he has advised on a wide range of mergers, anti-competitive agreements, and abuse of dominance cases. 

Most recently, Dr. Ritzmann was the first Chief Economist of the new Competition Commission of Hong Kong, where he was one of the team who established the new authority. Previously, he was the Principal Economist at the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, and a member of the Chief Economist Team at the Directorate-General for Competition of the European Commission. Dr. Ritzmann has also held positions with two leading economic consultancy firms based in Europe, where he worked on a range of competition cases and provided in-country policy advice to several governments newly establishing regulatory and other authorities in Asia, Europe, and Africa. He is also a lawyer qualified in Europe, the USA, and Australia who has practiced as a competition and corporate lawyer.

Dr. Ritzmann holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Oxford University and a M.Sc. in Economics from the London School of Economics, an LL.M. in Law from Melbourne University and a Postgraduate Diploma in EU Competition Law from King’s College London.
